Whisky Tasting Night: Featuring 8 Whiskies on 11 April
SUMMARISED INFORMATION
Speyside Distillers Beinn Dubh aka Ben Doo The Black”, Speyside
Speyside Distillery and their Award Winning Single Malt Whisky – Beinn Dubh – has established itself as the local whisky of the Cairngorms and was launched and tasted for the first time at the 2015 Thunder in the Glens (TITG) rally to rave reviews. The local BEINN DUBH Ruby Black Single Malt Scotch Whisky, itself POTENT and MYSTERIOUS, uses water from the Cairngorm Black Mountain and is perfectly finished in toasted ruby port casks from Portugal. ‘Black Mountain’ is how professor Norma Collie (University College, London) described Ben Macdui, the highest peak of the Cairngorm mountains, after his solo climb to the summit in 1891.
The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated, Highland
Nestled in the valley of Forgue, deep in the East Highland hills, is The GlenDronach, one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, creating the finest richly sherried single malts for nearly 200 years. GlenDronach’s Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie has honoured the distillery’s whisky-making heritage and created The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated. Made with the same principles laid down nearly two hundred years ago by GlenDronach’s founder, James Allardice, when peat was a commonly used fuel source. Being both cheap and plentiful, it was traditional practice in the Highlands to burn it in the kiln towards the end of the barley malting, infusing a rich, warm, earthy smokiness on the whisky.
Macallan Edition no.6
The sixth and final release in the “The Macallan Edition” series, Edition No. 6 takes its inspiration from the natural wonders of the legendary River Spey and The Macallan Estate, where each and every cask of The Macallan is matured before being hand-selected for use by their expert whisky makers. All of the five distinct casks types used to create Edition No. 6 have been hand-picked by The Macallan Whisky Maker Steven Bremner. He drew inspiration from unique stories related to the river and surrounding landscape. The American and European oak casks have been selected to create a flavour profile that will deliver a multifaceted experience; from the appealing rich brass natural colour, to the layers of aroma, followed by the deep and rewarding flavour.
BenRiach The Twelve, Speyside
The Benriach Distillery was founded in 1898 and although the rough-hewn walls of our warehouses may seem unassuming, they are home to a rare breed of creative expertise in whisky distilling and eclectic cask maturation. To make Benriach Twelve, Benriach spirit is three casks matured for at least twelve years in sherry casks, bourbon barrels, and port casks. The whisky from each cask is then expertly married together to create a smooth, sherry-rich single malt, layered with baked fruit, maple honey and cocoa, perfectly balanced with a lingering sultana and spiced mocha finish.
Wemyss Vintage Malts The Hive 12 YO Gift Tin
Wemyss Malts was established in 2005 by William Wemyss, whose family home is Wemyss Castle in Fife, though the family’s connections with Scotch whisky can be traced back to the early 19th century when John Haig’s first distillery was built on Wemyss land. Today, barley grown on the Wemyss Estate is used by many distillers.
The Hive, one of Wemyss Malts’ signature blended malts, is based around a signature malt from Speyside blended with at least 16 others from the Highlands, Lowlands and Islay. As with other whiskies in Wemyss’ blended malt range, The Hive’s name was chosen to reflect the character of the liquid – waxy, sweet and honeyed.
1996 Hunter Laing The Sovereign, North British, 21 YO, Edinburgh, Lowland
A single grain Scotch whisky from North British distillery. In 1996, the Lowland whisky was placed in a single refill hogshead for a lengthy 21 years. It was then bottled at cask strength in November 2017 by Hunter Laing for The Sovereign series, in a release of 219 numbered bottles.
1988 Berry Bros & Rudd Berry’s Own Selection, Strathclyde, Cask #62112, Lowland
A single grain whisky matured in a single cask (ref. 62112) from 1988 to 2017 before it was bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd. Strathclyde grain distillery is located in the Gorbals district of Glasgow on the south side of the river Clyde. This area is far-flung from the picturesque image of remote Highland distilleries although it has played a vital part in the heritage of scotch whisky since 1927 and its product is top class.
1987 Invergordon Single Grain, Wemyss Vintage Malts “Kettle Fried Corn”, 31 YO
Although William Wemyss originally worked in the wine business, the Wemyss family’s connections with the whisky industry date back to the turn of the 19th century when John Haig (founder of Haig’s) built his first distillery on Wemyss land. Their range was conceived with the aim of making whisky more accessible and understandable. They use the taste and aromas of the individual whiskies – rather than the distillery name – to identify each bottling so that the consumer can more easily recognise the style being purchased. – “Kettle Fried Corn”, the way we love it in the cinema. Content of a single barrel of sherry and 31 years old whiskey. Serious color for a single grain whiskey. Not in vain, the older whiskeys of Invergordon have a definite world of taste, they also have a single malt whiskey in terms of quality and character.
